Core-needle biopsy (trephine or trucut)

This technique uses a thick needle and certain devices that ‘shoot’ it into the tissues. It allows to obtain the whole ‘column’ of the material that contains the whole structure of the tissue. This amount of material is enough to perform histological, immunohistological and molecular genetic examinations.

This technique plays a major role in establishing the diagnosis and prescribing full and successful treatment. The procedure is ultrasound or x-ray guided to confirm the accuracy of the needle hitting the lesion and is usually performed in outpatient setting with local anesthesia and takes very little time. Establishing correct diagnosis and prescribing adequate treatment is impossible without identifying biological features of the tumor, and trephine-biopsy allows to determine them.
